San Diego, CA – Fatal Plane Crash Off Pt Loma Leaves 6 Dead

San Diego, CA (June 9, 2025) – A tragic plane crash off the coast of Point Loma claimed six lives on Sunday afternoon, June 8.

At about 12:45 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard received a report that a twin-engine Cessna 414 had gone down roughly three miles west of Point Loma. Crews found a debris field in waters estimated to be about 200 feet deep.

The Cessna had departed San Diego International Airport at 12:24 p.m., en route to Phoenix. It crashed minutes later around 12:30 p.m. The FAA said the pilot and five passengers on board were all killed. The aircraft was completely destroyed in the impact.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, San Diego Harbor Police, and San Diego lifeguards. The search continued overnight and into Monday morning. No survivors were located.

Air traffic recordings captured the pilot calling “mayday” shortly before impact, with controllers urging him to gain altitude. A local surfer saw the plane descend from the clouds and crash at full speed into the ocean.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation. The names of the victims have not yet been released. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and determine what caused the crash.
