San Diego, CA – Fatal Plane Crash in Murphy Cyn Neighborhood

San Diego, CA (May 22, 2025) – A private jet crashed into a San Diego neighborhood on May 22, killing three people and injuring at least eight others.
The Cessna 550 jet went down around 3:47 a.m. in the Murphy Canyon area near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. Officials say dense fog and low visibility may have played a role in the crash. The aircraft struck power lines before crashing and bursting into flames, damaging at least 10 homes and destroying multiple vehicles.
According to Sound Talent Group, a San Diego-based music agency, three of their employees died in the crash, including co-founder Dave Shapiro. No residents were killed, but nearly 100 people had to evacuate.
One person was hospitalized with minor injuries. Several others were treated at a nearby evacuation center. Firefighters quickly arrived to contain the fire, but debris was scattered across several blocks, and the smell of smoke and fuel lingered in the area for hours.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash. We extend our sincere wishes for recovery to those injured in this incident.
Plane Crashes in San Diego Neighborhoods
California has seen several small aircraft accidents in recent years, especially in urban areas near general aviation airports like Montgomery-Gibbs. Many of these crashes happen during poor weather, mechanical failure, or pilot error.
In San Diego, low coastal clouds and fog—known as the marine layer—can create dangerous flying conditions, especially during early morning hours. The National Weather Service reported visibility of just a quarter mile at the time of Thursday’s crash, which may have played a key role.
When a private plane goes down in a residential area, the consequences can be devastating. Not only are passengers at risk, but nearby residents can suffer serious injuries, emotional trauma, property damage, or even long-term displacement.
Victims of aviation accidents may be entitled to compensation for injuries, medical bills, lost property, and emotional suffering. Determining fault in plane crashes often involves complex investigations, including weather analysis, maintenance records, and pilot qualifications.
