Santa Clarita, CA (May 21, 2025) – A tragic crash on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a young Los Angeles County deputy in Santa Clarita.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), 21-year-old Daniel V. Chavira was off-duty when he was involved in a multi-car accident around 3:40 p.m. The crash occurred on San Francisquito Canyon Road and involved three vehicles.

Emergency crews responded quickly. Chavira was airlifted to Henry Mayo Hospital but died from his injuries. Other victims were also taken to the same hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been released.

The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. It remains unclear what caused the crash.

Chavira had joined the LASD on May 2, shortly after completing the academy. He was assigned to the North County Correctional Facility and was scheduled to start patrol school on the day of the crash.

Sheriff Robert Luna shared a statement expressing deep sorrow, calling Chavira dedicated and humble. Our hearts are with the family of the deceased.
