Crestline, CA – Fatal Hit-and-Run on SR-18 Near Cliffhanger Rd

Crestline, CA (September 22, 2024) – On the evening of September 21, 2024, a fatal incident occurred on State Route 18 near Cliffhanger Road, prompting a significant response from local authorities. According to initial reports, a male individual was found lying in the roadway with no vehicle visible at the scene, leading responders to believe the person was struck by a passing car. The incident was reported at approximately 7:32 PM, and efforts to locate the vehicle involved have been unsuccessful so far, with no description of the suspected car available.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) was alerted, and a safety admonishment was issued to the reporting party, urging them to remain out of traffic lanes for their own safety. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office was notified and dispatched to the scene shortly thereafter. As of 7:40 PM, it was confirmed that the individual had succumbed to their injuries, marking this as a fatal collision. Emergency crews, including fire department personnel, were given clearance to approach the scene, despite traffic being blocked on the southbound lanes of State Route 18.

Traffic in the area has been heavily impacted, with officials reporting that the southbound lanes remain closed. Authorities, including the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO), are assisting with traffic control. Caltrans has been contacted to establish a full road closure just south of the 138 Crestline Bridge.
