Hit-and-Run Accidents in San Diego
Hit-and-run accidents continue to be a major concern in San Diego and across California. These incidents happen when a driver causes a crash and leaves the scene without helping the injured or reporting the accident. In many cases, victims are left without critical information needed to file insurance claims or pursue justice.
California law requires all drivers involved in a crash to stop and exchange information, regardless of who is at fault. When a driver flees, it can lead to criminal charges as well as civil liability. Hit-and-run crashes are especially difficult because the victims may suffer physical injuries, emotional trauma, and financial stress, all while the at-fault party avoids responsibility.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, thousands of hit-and-run crashes happen every year. San Diego, being a large metropolitan area, sees its fair share of these incidents. Freeways like I-8 and I-805, where this crash occurred, are especially prone to hit-and-run situations due to high speeds and heavy traffic. Drivers may panic after causing a crash, but leaving the scene only adds legal consequences.
Victims of hit-and-run crashes have legal options. If the fleeing driver is later identified, they can be held responsible for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and vehicle damage. Even if the driver isn’t found, victims may still be able to file a claim through their own uninsured motorist coverage.
