Los Angeles, CA (May 26, 2025) – A deadly car crash happened early Tuesday morning near George Washington Carver Middle School in South Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, two vehicles collided at the corner of Vernon Avenue and McKinley Avenue on May 27, around 7:06 a.m. The crash occurred less than an hour before classes began at the nearby middle school.

Police confirmed that one person died at the scene. As of 8 a.m., the victim had not been identified. Officials have not said whether anyone else was hurt in the crash.

SkyCAL images showed a silver sedan with major damage on the driver’s side. A white tent was placed on the sidewalk, suggesting the victim’s body remained at the location during the investigation.

Our sincere condolences go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time.

Fatal Car Accidents in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the busiest cities in the country for vehicle traffic—and sadly, for deadly car crashes too. According to the city’s Department of Transportation, hundreds of fatal collisions happen on L.A. roads each year.

Many of these crashes occur near schools, where students and parents gather during the morning rush. Factors like speeding, distracted driving, or running red lights often play a role in early morning crashes. If someone else’s careless driving caused the crash, a personal injury attorney can help gather evidence and build a case. Police reports, witness statements, and camera footage are all critical in proving fault.

The loss of a loved one in a car crash is one of the most devastating experiences a family can face. In fatal accidents like the recent collision near George Washington Carver Middle School, families are often left not only with emotional pain but also with financial burdens from funeral costs, lost income, and other unexpected expenses. Victims of fatal accidents, or their families, may be entitled to compensation through a wrongful death claim. These claims can cover funeral costs, lost income, and pain and suffering.
