Los Angeles, CA – 16-Year-Old Killed in Hit-and-Run on San Pedro St

Los Angeles, CA (February 25, 2025) – A teenage boy lost his life early Sunday morning, February 23, in a hit-and-run crash while riding a pocket bike in South Los Angeles. Authorities say the driver responsible for the fatal collision fled the scene on foot.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. as the 16-year-old victim was riding north on San Pedro Street, just past 99th Street. According to security footage reviewed by investigators, a dark-colored Toyota Corolla was seen speeding before violently colliding with the pocket bike from behind. The impact crushed the small motorized bike into the front end of the car.
Emergency responders with the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and pronounced the teen dead at the scene. His name has not been officially released by police, but candles left at a roadside memorial displayed the name “Hayden.”
Authorities say the driver of the Toyota, described as a heavyset man possibly in his 20s, fled the crash site on foot. As of Sunday night, law enforcement was still searching for the suspect.
In a separate incident later Sunday evening, police also investigated another fatal hit-and-run in South Los Angeles that claimed the life of a woman in her 60s.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young victim. Our thoughts are also with the family of the pedestrian who lost her life in the second crash.
Hit-and-Run Accidents in California
Hit-and-run crashes are a major concern in California, with thousands of incidents occurring each year. These tragic accidents often leave families devastated as they struggle to find justice for their loved ones. Los Angeles, in particular, has seen a troubling rise in hit-and-run collisions involving both pedestrians and cyclists.
Understanding the risks on the road is crucial. Here are some common dangers that contribute to hit-and-run crashes:
- Lack of Visibility – Small vehicles like pocket bikes can be difficult for drivers to see, especially at night. Without proper lighting or reflectors, riders face a greater risk of being struck.
- Speeding Drivers – High-speed collisions are more likely to be fatal, especially when smaller vehicles or pedestrians are involved. Drivers who speed through city streets increase the likelihood of losing control.
- Unlicensed or Underage Riders – Many pocket bikes are illegally operated on public roads, often by minors who may lack proper experience. These bikes also frequently lack essential safety features.
- Driver Negligence and Recklessness – Some drivers fail to notice smaller vehicles or pedestrians due to distractions, impaired driving, or reckless behavior. Unfortunately, some choose to flee rather than take responsibility.
